Objectives

1. Learn about the historical significance of quilts
2. Explore geometry, symmetry, fractions, area, numbers, and logic through quilt patterns
3. Read from a variety of literary sources to acquire information
4. Use a variety of strategies to comprehend selections read aloud and selections read independently
5. Write in different forms for different purposes
6. Develop poetry appreciation
7. Use telecommunications to collaborate, publish, and interact with peers.

Recommended For Students:

Grades 1-3 (ages 6-9)
Students will be able to read work by children their own age and with similar reading levels. Teachers will also have a resource for ideas for a complete teaching unit or suggestions to supplement current units of study.

Summary:

Participating classes will read books about quilts. These books can be fact or fiction. Students will engage in a language arts activity that will be showcased on a web site. Students may work individually, in small groups, or as a class. The URL for this project is:

Date:

All materials are due by February 18, 2001. Use one of the suggested activities and send student work in a Word file to dennisons@lisd.net. The site will be up around March 1, 2001 and will remain posted to be used as a resource for teachers and students.

Number of Participants:

There will be a separate page for twenty-five participating grade 1 to grade 3 classes.

Suggested Activities:

· Author Study
· Write a book review
· Create new endings for the story
· Share facts or personal experiences about quilts
· Rewrite the story as a play
· Talk about the historical significance
· Tell about a math activity done with quilts
· Write a poem (See sample poems.)
